The most popular form of yoga practiced today is the Hatha Yoga – a sub-branch of Raja Yoga which focuses on meditation. In Hatha Yoga, the person’s wellbeing is a big contributor to the creation of the spiritual path of the body, so, in this case, breathing and posture while maintaining deep concentration must first be perfected.
The major component of the Hatha Yoga is the yoga posture or the asanas that is why this yoga is referred to as “tiring”. However, Hatha Yoga must not be confused with the ordinary exercise that we do in school though they are partly similar in nature.
Hatha Yoga and Exercise
Exercise is fatiguing because the movements are done with force and too much effort, like the push-ups, jumping jacks and running. In contrast, Hatha Yoga uses slow movements of the asanas performed.
The awareness of a person in exercise is external. Because most exercises are goal-oriented, the person focuses more on the attainment of a goal (e.g. a man must complete 20 push-ups in half a minute or a runner must be the first to reach the finish line). In Hatha Yoga, the awareness focuses on breathing and concentration – this is internal. What is important is not the amount of sweat you perspired during the activity but how you execute the asanas and movements according to how they should be done.
The Process of Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga combines breathing and asanas to exercise the body. For the purpose of healing, the concentration must focus directly on the sick body part. While breathing deeply, an asana can be performed to massage the said part.
A Hatha yoga posture, if done correctly, will be advantageous to one’s health. The discipline may seem difficult at first, but as you come to do it more often, you would feel that whatever pain is present in the beginning of the commitment will eventually be minimized.
Though the perfection of the spirit gives sense to Hatha yoga, it is the condition of the body that prepares the mind for meditation. A person in pain cannot focus well so how can the process of uniting the body, mind and spirit be achieved if this is the case?
Remember, Hatha Yoga must be performed not just with a calm, peaceful mind, but with fit and healthy body as well.
